In loving memory of
Tsai-Lan Liu
1919-2020
Beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother
About Her

Early Years
Her childhood and education
The youngest daughter in a big family, Tsai-Lan was born on January 18th, 1919, at the old Yeh's mansion on Three Lanes and Seven Alleys in Fuzhou, China. A smart, pretty, and brave little girl, she was raised by her elder brother and sisters. She worked diligently to receive her degree from National Normal University at Lang-Tien.
Married Life
Meeting Grandpa Liu
After graduating from college, she became a teacher at the National Borderlands School in Chongqing. An administrator at the school noticed her dedication and talent, and introduced her to his younger brother, Yung-Kai Liu, who worked in nearby Chengdu. The two were married in 1946, shortly before they moved back to Fuzhou. Joining an old, traditional Chinese family was not easy, but with her intellect and charm, she quickly earned popularity and respect among the Liu's.

Motherhood

Moving to Taiwan, raising five kids
In 1947, our family moved to Taiwan. Mrs. Liu raised five children during that difficult era, working hard to provide a warm and secure home. In this nurturing environment, she taught her children self-confidence and the importance of a strong work ethic. These traits served them well during their own immigration to the United States, where they overcame the challenges of integrating into American society and flourished.
Her Legacy
Grandchildren and future generations
Mrs. Liu had eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She instilled in them all the importance of education, proudly attending each college graduation. Yet her legacy extends well beyond the Liu family. In her three decades as a professor and educator, Mrs. Liu taught countless students, who in turn became a new generation of teachers. She was loved by her family, respected by her colleagues, and adored by her students. She will be dearly missed by us, all around the world.

Tsai-Lan Liu Forever
On a freezing New York winter morning, December 9th 2020, our beloved mother and cherished grandmother to our kids, completed a century plus long journey on earth before peacefully returning to heaven to reunite with her sweetheart, our father.
Mother was born as the youngest daughter in a big family on January 18th, 1919, at the old Yeh mansion on Three Lanes and Seven Alleys in Fuzhou, China. As a smart and brave little girl, she was raised by her elder brother and sisters, working diligently to receive her degree from National Normal University at Lang-Tien. After graduating from college She became a teacher at National borderlands school in Chongqing. An administrator at the school noticed her dedication and talent, and introduced her to his younger brother, Yung-Kai Liu, who worked in nearby city Chengdu. The two were married in 1946, shortly before moving back to Fuzhou. Joining an old, traditional Chinese family was not an easy task, but with her smooth diplomatic and people skills, she quickly earned popularity and respect among the Liu’s.
In 1947, our family emigrated to Taiwan. Mother raised five children during that difficult era and worked hard to provide us with a warm and secure home. This nurturing environment taught us that special traits reside in all five of us: courage, diligence, a strong work ethic and self-confidence. None of us graduated from an elite university, however, armed with these traits, we made our own immigration to the United States and flourished here, successfully overcoming the challenges of US society.
Among mother's grandchildren, there is no shortage of elite school graduates. With those great traits they inherited from us, we know that all of them will have tremendous achievements and pass those traits on for generations to come.
Sun rise, Sun set. Mother, who has her Buddhism name of Tsai-ze, completed her journey on earth. Now she can continue her journey in heaven happily.
